The west of Roatan is where most dive sites are situated, especially from West End Point all the way up to Sandy Bay. West End Village is where many resorts, dive shops and restaurants are found. It is the place to be for some nightlife and entertainment when you have decided not to dive in the evening. Just outside West End Village you can take a look at the Roatan Butterfly garden or take a canopy tour above its green jungle. Half Moon Bay, Mangrove Bight and Gibson Bight are sheltered pristine bays, worth a visit. The island's only hyperbaric chamber is located at the Cornerstone Medical Clinic in Sandy Bay. Some of the best beaches (West Bay Beach) can be found at the tip near West End Point. You can also explore its bird park, visit dolphin shows or go shopping in West End. The capital Coxen Hole was named after a notorious pirate and is nowadays a lively town with fruit markets and many street vendors. It is also near Roatan's only international airport.

The coral reefs just in front of the northwestern shores are excellent wall dives dropping down to 40 meter and more. Pelagic species fight with each other for the best spot on the wall. Tiny creatures inhabit the rich coral formations. The most famous dive sites are probably Hole in the Wall and the Eagle Wreck or Aquila. Fortunately, the whole northwestern region is contained in the West End Marine Reserve, protected against fishing, shell harvesting and lobstering. The south shores are more remote and less visited by divers. However, you can find some of the best dive sites here between Coxen Hole and Flowers Bay.
